| Description: | Ice Particles formed on the underside of a leaf. This shot was taken on a frosty morning in late December on a footpath near Woolacombe in Devon using a Canon EOS 40D and a 60mm macro lens. It was changed to a monochrome or black and white image because there was not much sun about and the light was a bit flat. Changing an image to black and white in poorly lit conditions is a good way to add punch and definition; this can be seen in the shot. A shot like this can look stunning in colour but it would need to well lit preferably with early morning or late evening sun, this would bring out the autumnal colours of the leaf. In this shot you can see that the individual dewdrops have frozen overnight to form ice particles and have completely covered the leaf, the ice particles have also given the image a texture that would not normally be present. The leaf is upside down, so all veins of the leaf are visible with the focal point in the foreground and the veins lead away from the focal point naturally. In this image you can see how the ice is thicker on the stems of the leaf than on the leaf itself this helped when turning the image to black and white because it gave the picture more depth. Snow and ice are not all that common in the South West so when we do get a cold snap or snow you will find many photographers braving the bitterly cold elements. I have spent plenty of time in freezing conditions trying to capture the wonderful shapes that ice can produce. I can remember taking some macro photos of a leaf that had been frozen in a lake; it took hours to get the shot just right! By the time I had got the shot I wanted I couldn’t feel my hands or feet! When its snows in Devon everyone with a camera is out and about, the landscape suddenly becomes more interesting and different. Ice and snow can completely transform the landscape they can turn the most uninteresting objects and scenes into beautiful soft white landscapes of majestic objects.
